Ekaterinburg - city in the Ural mountains (Russia), population: 1.4 million. Ekaterinburg was founded in the Urals in 1721 by Vasily Tatischev (Russian) and Georg Wilhelm de Gennin(Dutch) as a result of urgent need of metal ore by the Russian government for military purpose, as at that time Russian Empire was at the state of war with Sweden (main importer of iron for Russia for that time). Firstly, the city of Ekaterinburg was called “Isetsk” – by the name of the river Iset, on which it is located. But son it was renamed to Ekaterinburg, - the reason for that is: Peter I wife’s name was Catherine, also St.Catherine was a patron saint for all miners. According to the original plan, Ekaterinburg was supposed to become the main administrative center for Ural region. During the Soviet period (1922-1991) Ekaterinburg was renamed to Sverdlovsk, after Jakob Sverdlov- one of the communist leaders, responsible for the assassination of the Romanovs – the last royal family of Russia. During the Second World War, Ekaterinburg becomes major industrial center of USSR: many military factories were evacuated here from European part of Russia, city population increased more then 2 times! Now Ekaterinburg is the fourth biggest city of Russia (after Novosibirsk) with population of more then 1.400.000 people. It is the capital city of Sverdlovskaya oblast and Ural Federal district. Ekaterinburg is very close to the geographical border between Europe and Asia continents - 14 kilometers East – so the city is actually in Asia.
